Round 5 Suzuka Circuit [GT500 class]

The 2024 AUTOBACS SUPER GT Round 5 at Suzuka Circuit delivered an unforgettable conclusion to the season, with Sho Tsuboi and Kenta Yamashita (#36 au TOM'S GR Supra/Bridgestone) claiming a dominant pole-to-win victory. Their stellar performance crowned them champions, marking their third win of the season and securing a triumphant end to their campaign.

Originally slated for August 31st to September 1st, the Suzuka round was postponed due to Typhoon No. 10 and rescheduled for December—making it the first-ever SUPER GT race held in this month. The duo of Tsuboi and Yamashita entered the race with momentum, having clinched their second win of the season during Round 8 at Mobility Resort Motegi.

QUALIFYING DRAMA AND CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDER

With an 18-point lead over their closest rivals, Naoki Yamamoto and Tadasuke Makino (#100 STANLEY CIVIC TYPE R-GT/ Bridgestone), Tsuboi and Yamashita were poised to secure the championship. The qualifying sessions were intense, with several teams pushing to break course records. In Q1, Tsugio Matsuda and Teppei Natori (#24 REALIZE CORPORATION ADVAN Z) topped the timesheets, while Tsuboi/Yamashita secured third, trailing by just 0.067 seconds.

Q2 witnessed even more record-breaking action. Kazuya Oshima and Nirei Fukuzumi (#14 ENEOS X PRIME GR Supra/ Bridgestone) set a new course record but faced a five-grid penalty for blocking another car. Tsuboi and Yamashita, demonstrating remarkable consistency, emerged as pole sitters with their combined times, earning three valuable points and extending their championship lead to an unassailable 21 points. This sealed the title for Tsuboi and Yamashita even before the final race began.

THE FINAL RACE: POLE-TO-WIN MASTERCLASS

On a crisp December day, with air temperatures at 13°C and road temperatures at 19°C, the season finale unfolded before a packed grandstand at Suzuka. After a ceremonial parade lap led by local law enforcement vehicles, the 51-lap, 300-kilometer race roared to life.

Starting from pole, Tsuboi and Yamashita led the field, holding off a strong challenge from Koudai Tsukagoshi and Kakunoshin Ohta (#17 Astemo CIVIC TYPE R-GT/Bridgestone). However, drama struck on Lap 9 when Tsukagoshi/Ohta collided with a GT300 car at the Degner Curve, dropping them out of contention and triggering the first Full Course Yellow (FCY).

As the race resumed, Mitsunori Takaboshi and Atsushi Miyake (#3 Niterra MOTUL Z/Bridgestone) emerged as the primary challengers, launching multiple attacks on the leaders. Despite the pressure, Tsuboi and Yamashita maintained their composure.

The race saw another FCY mid-way, and in a twist of fate, Takaboshi/Miyake spun at the same Degner Curve, relinquishing their position. This allowed Tsukakoshi/Ohta to climb back to second, while Kazuki Hiramine and Bertrand Baguette (#12 MARELLI IMPUL Z/ Bridgestone) charged through the field to claim third. With flawless strategy and impeccable execution, Tsuboi and Yamashita crossed the finish line in first, securing back-to-back wins and their third victory of the season. Their success also marked the second championship title for the iconic au TOM'S team.

WORDS FROM THE PODIUM

I’m thrilled to have won my third championship. Each title has been significant in its own way. The first was a remarkable comeback, and the second was a hard-fought battle right up to the final race. This year, however, it felt like I had secured the championship even before the final race. While all three championships share the same level of prestige, the journey to each has been unique.

This third title stands out because we maintained the top ranking throughout the entire season. In that sense, I believe this year showcased my speed and strength like never before. I hope this performance made our rivals feel, 'There's no way we can beat the No. 36 car.' I’m deeply grateful to Bridgestone, the team, the staff, and everyone who supported me this season."

Sho Tsuboi, Winning Driver (au TOM'S GR Supra/Bridgestone)

"This year, I joined TGR TEAM au TOM'S No. 36 car and entered an environment where winning the championship was an absolute must. Before the season started, I thought, 'It’ll be fine,' but as the races progressed, there were moments when I struggled to adapt, which put some pressure on me.

As the season drew closer to the final race, Tsuboi had already achieved success in Super Formula, and the double title was within reach in SUPER GT. The team was also aiming for back-to-back championships. This was a completely new experience for me, and I felt a lot of pressure and tension throughout many of the races.

Despite that, I think I delivered the necessary performance to secure the championship. In today’s race, even a momentary lapse in focus could have cost us the win, possibly dropping us to second or third place. But we managed to stay on top, and I’m truly happy that we achieved the championship in such a flawless way. I’m immensely grateful to Tsuboi, the team, the staff, and Bridgestone for their support.

Kenta Yamashita, Winning Driver (au TOM'S GR Supra/Bridgestone)

"For this first December race, we selected tyres that offered strong performance in both qualifying and the final race, providing them to all the teams. However, the track temperature dropped by 8 degrees from the start to the end of qualifying. This created a challenging scenario, as the track temperature in Q1 was at the upper limit for the tyres chosen by each team, while in Q2, it was at the lower limit.

Given the conditions, especially at this time of year, we prioritised safe tyre choices over aggressive ones for low temperatures. I believe this approach allowed each team to perform at their best.

In the final, there were some challenges with tyre warm-up, but the champion team—car No. 36 with Tsuboi and Yamashita—had already secured the championship during qualifying. They opted for tyres that delivered stable performance during the second stint. While there were moments when other teams pushed them hard, they stayed strong and claimed victory, bringing the season to a spectacular close."
